Ingredients

Cookies
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • ¾ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
Maple Frosting
  • cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 –2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon
For Finishing
  • Ground cinnamon as needed
  • Granulated sugar optional

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. In a separate large bowl, beat softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and creamy, about 2–3 minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and maple syrup until combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix just until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
  6. Scoop approximately 2 tablespoons of dough for each cookie and place on the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between cookies.
  7. Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden and the centers still look slightly soft.
  8. Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack.
  9. Allow the cookies to cool completely before frosting.
  10. For the frosting, beat softened butter until smooth and creamy.
  11. Gradually add powdered sugar and mix until combined.
  12. Add maple syrup and vanilla extract.
  13. Add heavy cream or milk a little at a time until the frosting becomes smooth and spreadable.
  14. Spread a thin layer of maple frosting over each cooled cookie.
  15. Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.
  16. Allow the frosting to set before stacking or serving.

Notes

Use softened butter rather than melted butter for the best cookie texture.
Measure flour carefully to prevent dry, dense cookies.
Remove the cookies from the oven while the centers still look slightly soft.
Let cookies cool completely before frosting.
Add milk or cream gradually to the frosting so it doesn't become too thin.
Pure maple syrup provides the best flavor.
Pecans or walnuts can be added for extra crunch.
